Solving complex emission challenges with In-situ CEMS

As global shipping accelerates its transition towards a greener future, shipowners must meet increasingly regulatory requirements for stricter emission-reduction targets set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Under the MARPOL Annex VI, new vessels keel laid after 2016 operating in designated Tier III NOx Emission Control Areas, such as the North American, U.S. Caribbean, Baltic Sea and North Sea, must meet significantly stricter NOx limits.

As these regulated ECA zones continue to expand, continuous emissions monitoring is becoming essential for optimized and environmentally responsible vessel operations –  and achieving this doesn’t have to be complicated.

Our continuous In‑situ CEMS solutions for NOx, SO2, CO2 and NH3 are designed for real-time emission monitoring while simplifying compliance.

Transition to new fuels in shipping

Driven by regulation and global climate targets by 2050, the maritime industry is in a transition from heavy fuel oil toward low‑ and zero‑carbon alternatives. Decarbonizing global shipping requires new fuels, new technologies, and new approaches to engine design and emissions monitoring.

The shift to new fuels is complex and based on shipowners adopting investments in a multi-fuel pathway – combining near-term solutions such as LNG and methanol as well as longer-term options like ammonia – NH3.

As the maritime industry moves toward a multi-fuel future, the emissions landscape becomes more complex. Different fuels bring distinct emission profiles, operational implications, and compliance requirements – driving the need for new approaches to monitoring, control, and documentation.
