Ammonia monitoring for maritime applications
As ammonia – NH3 – develops from pilot fuel projects toward commercial use, emissions monitoring becomes operationally essential. While ammonia offers a zero‑carbon fuel pathway, it introduces new challenges related to toxicity, ammonia slip, and aftertreatment performance.

The challenge
Energy transition and decarbonization is impacting global shipping´s transition to low- and zero carbon fuels, such as LNG, methanol and ammonia.
While ammonia offers a zero-carbon pathway, it introduces new technical safety and regulatory challenges, as ammonia develops from pilot fuel toward approval and integration in engine development programs at engine OEMs.
Ammonia‑fueled and ammonia‑ready engines rely on Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems for NOx and NH3 control. To operate safely and efficiently, these systems must precisely manage ammonia dosing and monitor ammonia slip – unreacted NH3 in the exhaust – especially at higher concentrations than those seen in conventional engines.

Why ammonia monitoring matters
Accurate, real-time ammonia monitoring enables optimized SCR control, effective ammonia slip management and compliance with evolving class, port and regulatory requirements – providing the confidence needed to develop ammonia fueling from pilot projects to safe, commercial operation.
Ammonia slip is a growing concern for ammonia-fueled vessels. Elevated NH₃ levels can impact crew safety, equipment integrity, environmental compliance, and acceptance by ports and authorities. Monitoring ammonia slip at higher concentrations is therefore essential for safe and compliant operation.
MES 1001 Ammonia offers an extended range of 1,000 ppm NH3.
